For individuals who are thinking about making changes to their tobacco use, we have collected a number of resources available in Winnipeg or online. Most of these resources are free, and where there is a fee it has been noted in the description.
Quitting smoking now could decrease your chance of having a heart attack in only 6 months. Quitting will also decrease your risk of stroke, lung cancer, other cancers and respiratory diseases.

Getting Started
Quitting smoking can be a complicated journey. Dr. Mike Evans from Ontario has made an excellent video that can help get you ready for a quit attempt.

Smokers’ Helpline
A free, confidential service operated by the Canadian Cancer Society offering personalized support and information about quitting smoking and tobacco use. Telephone and online services available in Manitoba.

Manitoba Quits
Manitoba Quits A monthly quit smoking contest that challenges smokers to quit for just 24 hours. Their motto, “every quit counts” suggests that each quit attempt helps a person get the skills, mental strength and motivation to eventually quit for good.
Break it Off
Break It Off is a campaign that helps young adults quit smoking and stay smoke-free. It iprovides useful information on how to quit tobacco use with a “break up” theme. There is also an app available on Apple and Android phones.

“This workbook is designed as a self-help guide complete with the ideas and tools needed to assist people who have decided to quit smoking. The guide is divided into three sections: thinking and preparation, planning and choosing strategies, and then action. It allows people to go at their own pace and comfort level and choose the ideas and approach that best suit their individual needs”

On the Road to Quitting
“This Health Canada guide will give you the information and skills you need to successfully stop smoking. In-Person Programming
Commit to Quit
A free smoking-cessation group program designed for adults. A trained facilitator assists participants to learn skills and techniques to be smoke free.
Five 1 to 1.5-hour sessions

The Wellness Institute: Smoking Cessation
The Wellness Institute offers fee-for-service group or individual smoking cessation support programs, to help smokers quit and prevent a future relapse. They also offer a program for smoking cessation in the workplace.
