Aren’t you that religious place?

I still encounter individuals who wonder if SRWC is a faith-based organization.

This may be because we were named for St. Raphael–an Archangel, whose name means “God heals“, and who serves as the patron saint of healing, as well as medical workers and counsellors.

The name is a vestige of our origin as a church-based addictions support service in the early 1970’s. However, as we have developed in our purpose over the years, we are no longer associated with any religion or faith tradition.

Today, we believe that personal spirituality is one of many areas that are included in well-balanced, holistic living—our programs are not faith-based, and we welcome individuals from all cultural and religious backgrounds.

We are a non-profit agency who receives funding from the Manitoba Ministry of Health, Seniors and Active Living, as well as from private companies and individuals.

We are a community-based, meaning we work with individuals in group settings in downtown Winnipeg, not in residence. We provide group and individual counselling by trained and qualified counsellors.

We are the only agency in Winnipeg that specializes in working with individuals in pre- and post-treatment phases. Meaning our focus is working with participants before they get into treatment, and after they get out.

We are not AA based. We believe that there are many pathways to recovery. However, many of our participants attend both SRWC and AA programs. Our programs are evidence-based, and provide education, skill development, information, and counselling.
