Family Education Program Upcoming Sessions!
The FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAM is starting September 28th, 2020 for a period of 8-10 weeks, depending on the needs of the participants.
The FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM (ongoing) offers ongoing support for those participants who have completed either the Family Education Program or individual counselling.
The Family Education and Support Programs are a healing community of individuals from varied backgrounds with one common shared experience—concern for a friend or family member experiencing a Substance Use Disorder (SUD). SRWC offers empathy and understanding to help participants deal with stress, anxiety, and the loss of control that comes with having a family member with a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) or other mental health issues.
Leaning from a unique perspective
Some of the individuals helping facilitate these programs are in recovery themselves. Their experiences offer a unique perspective, and provide a much deeper understanding of what it means to struggle with (and recover from ) SUD.
Family services
SRWC Family services include the Family Education Program, a Family Support Program, Couples Counselling, and Individual Counselling.
In the Family Education Program, individuals and families will learn:
- The difference between helping and enabling
- The Stages of Change Model and its implications for recovery
- How to provide support that is most likely to encourage recovery
- Effective communication skills
- To recognize the impact of the stigma of addiction and mental health on the family
- The societal and health effects of addiction
- How to identify and intervene on unhelpful behaviours
- How to advocate for themselves and others
- How to move from just SURVIVING to THRIVING

- The program meetings are Monday evenings 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm (can change based on the needs of the majority of participants)
- The Family Education Program runs for 8-10 weeks depending on the needs of the majority of participants enrolled.
